New Student Outreach all Summer Long
The outreach team maintained an active presence at incoming freshman and transfer orientation sessions, which ran up to four days a week. During the sessions, LC staff and language instructors presented to students and families about the many languages available locally, as well as through the CourseShare program. The team promoted long-standing programs like TandemPlus, as well as newer resources like YOLO, and changes to the second language requirement that make it more flexible than ever for students.
In addition, the team staffed an orientation table, providing a wealth of printed materials, talking to students and their families one-on-one, and helping with language placement. This summer orientation included:
- New High School Student Orientation attendees - 7,042
- Transfer Student Orientation attendees - 1,819
The Language Center would like to thank all the language, culture and linguistics faculty and staff who participated in new student and transfer orientation sessions over the summer.
The core outreach team was led by Amanda Dalola and Saena Dozier, and included Peyton Deal, Kate Hein, Kaitlin McNary, Vianna O’Hara, Stephanie Treat and Ly Truong.
Sessions were led by these team members, plus a rotating group of language department representatives to ensure language variety.
Presenters included: Kristin Beamish-Brown, Summer Carreno, Cristina Castro, Yufen Chang, Cristina Cocchi, Marisol Galicia Estévez, Lauren Goodspeed, Ingela Haaland, Fatima Han, Ashlie Henery, Anne Hoffman-González, Bryce Johnson, Marnie Jorenby, Beth Kautz, Sugyung Kim, Mandy Menke, Ayumi Mita, Romina Montanari, Lily Obeda, Jenneke Oosterhoff, Kathleen Rider, Helena Ruf, Pei-Chun Shih, Yao Tu, Katrien Vanpee, Jamele Watkins, and Irina Zaykovskaya.
Summer ended as it often does in Minnesota, at the State Fair, with Amanda and Saena representing language and linguistics programs again, but this time to the broader community.
