Start a New Language Locally or with CourseShare (Now with Catalan)

Students and advisors: If you’re looking for a new language to start or recommend for Fall 2021, first consider one of the many languages offered locally at the university, which include options rarely available at domestic universities, like Dakota, Finnish, Hmong, Ojibwe, Somali and Urdu. If you still don’t see what you’re looking for, next check out CourseShare. Most of the beginning-level CourseShare courses we plan to receive are now open for registration, including the newly opened:

  • LANG 2011: Accelerated Catalan I

Other languages courses intended for beginners include:

  • LANG 1351: Beginning BSC (Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian) I
  • LANG 1021: Beginning Czech I
  • LANG 5221: Introduction to Middle Egyptian & Hieroglyphics I
  • LANG 1251: Beginning Haitian Creole I
  • LANG 1161: Beginning Hungarian I

Other beginning-level courses are expected to open for registration later this summer. Students who do not see the language or level they are looking for may submit a CourseShare inquiry or email elsie@umn.edu. Registration is limited to degree-seeking students, and most classes only have a few seats available, so don’t delay in signing up.
