Teaching with Writing: A practical seminar for faculty

August 19 – 23, 2019
1:00 – 4:00 pm
Registration request required

The annual Teaching with Writing seminar offers a unique, retreat-like opportunity for busy instructors who would like to take a little time in advance of the next academic year to focus on the ways they approach writing in their teaching. We take a case-study approach. Each participant focuses on one course they teach, and because we define writing broadly to include words, numbers, figures, and visuals, our discussions are relevant and pragmatic to courses across the University curriculum. By week's end, you will have...

  • determined a subset of specific writing abilities they expect students to develop/demonstrate (none of us can do everything!)
  • designed low-stakes and high-stakes writing assignments
  • become familiar with strategies for providing students with effective, actionable feedback on their writing
  • created assignment-specific grading schemes that ensure fair, constructive assessment
  • experimented with time-saving commenting, peer response, and grading strategies;
  • been given access to a site loaded with instructional resources
  • spent five mornings drinking good coffee and talking to interesting colleagues from across the disciplines about relevant teaching ideas.

Registration requests will be considered from any UMN faculty member or full-time P&A instructor.  This seminar is offered free of charge. Contact Heidi Solomonson in the Center for Writing at (612) 625-0791 or heidis@umn.edu with questions.

Facilitator: Pamela Flash, Director, Writing Across the Curriculum; Co-Director, Center for Writing; Director, Writing-Enriched Curriculum Project
