MPR | Language Learning as an Adult: A Discussion with Amanda Dalola
The joys and challenges
Have you ever considered changing your GPS to another language? How about switching the system language on your gaming console or watching a show in a language other than English?
These are examples of digital immersion in daily life, a language-learning strategy readily available to both children and adults. And it’s far from the only effective strategy adults have for learning new languages. Just ask Amanda Dalola, an associate professor of linguistics and the director of CLA’s Language Center.
Dalola spoke with MPR News about the joys and challenges of learning a new language as an adult. Listen to that conversation for insights about:
- Why adults are well-positioned to learn new languages, such as understanding context and awareness of how we learn best.
- The many reasons you might want to learn a new language, from connecting with your heritage and improving work opportunities to developing cognitive reserve.
- How language-learning is like hitting the gym: consistency beats intensity.
The big takeaway? You might be better equipped than ever to learn a new language!
