“Bells Ringing and Muezzins Calling: Exploring Sound in the Latin East”
Medieval painting of a building with people writing at desks, working with compasses, and ringing bells.
Event Date & Time

In this talk I will examine the ways that sounds manifest in the primary sources of the Latin East. In Frankish and Arabic sources, authors routinely refer to sounds associated with different factions, focusing in particular on the bells introduced to the region by the first crusaders, and the Islamic call to prayer, or adhan. As part of the initial stages of a new research project, I will discuss the rhetorical use of the bell and adhan, as well as the evidence for their actual presence in the daily lives of the residents of the crusader states.
