CMS is accepting IDF Applications!

Interdisciplinary Doctoral Fellowships, 2018-2019

The Center for Medieval Studies and the Center for Early Modern History are pleased to serve jointly as one of the sites for the Graduate School's Interdisciplinary Doctoral Fellowships (IDF). The IDF provides support for outstanding doctoral students doing interdisciplinary research in connection with the University's interdisciplinary research centers and institutes.

Applicants for the IDF are required to include a letter of endorsement from the center or institute’s director in their application. In order to be considered for a letter of endorsement from CEMH/CMS, you must submit your completed Nominee Application, a curriculum vitae, and your research proposal directly to the Centers by Monday, October 22, 2018. The Centers will review the applications and notify applicants by Wednesday, October 31, 2018 whether or not their applications will be supported by CEMH/CMS. The Centers will then supply a letter of endorsement from the appropriate center director to the graduate program or department of each successful applicant in advance of the Graduate School’s deadline. The graduate programs and/or departments are responsible for compiling all information required for your application and for completing the electronic application on the Graduate School’s website by the deadline of noon Friday, November 16, 2018.

In addition to the selection criteria listed by the Graduate School, the CEMH/CMS review committee will consider how the applicant will benefit from residence in the Centers’ interdisciplinary intellectual community and how the Centers would benefit from each applicant’s residence.

Interdisciplinary Doctoral Fellows at CEMH/CMS will be awarded an additional $1,000 in research funds in support of their work. Graduate fellows are expected to give a presentation of their work in progress during their year of tenure and to participate actively in the Centers' programs. The affiliated faculty members of both Centers are eligible to serve as mentors for the fellowship. For complete lists of faculty, see http://www.cmedst.umn.edu/people/faculty.html or http://www.cemh.umn.edu/people/. You should secure an agreement with a faculty mentor prior to submitting your application to the Centers.

Applications should be submitted as a SINGLE PDF file directly to either the Center for Early Modern History (cemh@umn.edu) or the Center for Medieval Studies (cmedst@umn.edu) by October 22, 2018. Please include “IDF Application” in the subject line.
