Logan Gall completes his first year as Teaching Faculty of Spatial Data Science and Associate Director of GeoCommons

Logan Gall had a busy first year in his roles as Teaching Faculty of Spatial Data Science and the Associate Director of GeoCommons. He offered successfully redesigned versions of the Intermediate and Advanced Spatial Data Science courses and an undergraduate course in Digital Mapping. For example, the students in his Advanced Spatial Data Science class created an impressive portfolio of their class projects. He also co-taught the Principles of Cartography course with Robert McMaster who returned to the GES faculty after almost 17 years as Vice Provost and Dean for Undergraduate Education. Logan’s background in spatial data science has positioned him well to teach other courses on geovisualization, geospatial technologies, and GIS development. He is also a member of the MGIS faculty and advises students on a variety of independent study and internship opportunities.

Logan also serves as the Associate Director of GeoCommons, an innovative collaborative geospatial research, teaching, and public engagement initiative with state-of-the-art facilities in Blegen Hall. He works with Director Eric Shook in shaping and administering diverse programming and activities, fostering strong collaborations with units across the University system, as well as individuals and organizations working in GIScience in the public, private, non-profit, and government sectors.  This fall will feature the official launch of the Spatial Maker Space across the hall from GeoCommons. The Spatial Maker Space is dedicated to enhancing student projects and faculty research by providing access to a wide array of geospatial technologies such as lidar, environmental sensing, and robotics. We are grateful for the many ways Logan contributes to advancing the use of geospatial technologies and science to practical problem solving and his dedication to teaching the next generation of GIS professionals and scientists.
