International & Transfer Students
English Language Proficiency
Please see the University of Minnesota admissions standards and submission instructions for proof of English Language Proficiency.
Applicants who have completed at least 24 quarter credits or 16 semester credits of academic, writing and reading-intensive coursework at a recognized institution of higher learning in the United States (or other English-speaking country) may request a waiver of the TOEFL requirement by emailing an unofficial copy of their transcripts to email@example.com as soon as September 1, and no later than December 1. TOEFL waivers are granted by the Director of Graduate Studies for students who demonstrate through their transcripts that they have taken and succeeded in advanced reading/writing intensive coursework. Remedial English or ESL courses do not count towards this requirement, nor does Applied coursework such as lessons or ensembles.
Additional resources and information for international students at the University of Minnesota is available through International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS).
As an acredited, institutional member school of the National Association for Schools of Music, we kindly require graduate students who are currently enrolled at a school of music and looking to transfer to the University of Minnesota School of Music to submit a transfer release form by December 1. Per the NASM Code of Ethics, no admission or award will be offered without documented formal release. Forms may be submitted electronically to firstname.lastname@example.org, or by post to Music Admissions, 200A Ferguson Hall, 2106 4th Street South, Minneapolis MN 55455.
Transfer credits for applied lessons will be determined through a transfer-credit evaluation jury. The jury will take place at the end of the first semester of applied study.
Most music history courses and ensemble courses will transfer directly; however, students may need to submit a syllabus or course description for review.
