Dr. Emmanuel Rodriguez Appointed Assistant Director of Marching and Athletic Bands

The University of Minnesota School of Music is pleased to announce that Dr. Emmanuel Rodriguez has been named the next Assistant Director of Marching & Athletic Bands. Over the past semester, Dr. Rodriguez has served in an interim position and earned the praise of students, staff, and faculty for his outstanding work with the School of Music community. 

“I am thrilled to welcome Dr. Emmanuel Rodriguez back as our Assistant Director of Marching & Athletic Bands.” Assistant Director of Bands Dr. Betsy McCann shared. “Dr. Rodriguez brings energy, creativity, and passion that will lead our band program and students in exciting directions for years to come.”

“Dr. Rodriguez has already been a powerful example of artistic excellence and inclusive engagement,” says Patrick Warfield, Director of the School of Music. “We are delighted to welcome him fully into our community and I can’t wait to see what exciting innovations he brings next.”

Artist Bio

Dr. Emmanuel Rodriguez previously served as Interim Assistant Director of Marching and Athletic Bands, where he worked primarily with the “Pride of Minnesota” Marching Band and the “Gopher Groove” Pep Band. Rodriguez previously served on the music faculty at Indiana State University and the University of Louisiana at Monroe. 

As a native of South Florida, Rodriguez was fortunate to have taught in schools that served his hometown and community. Most recently, Rodriguez served as the Director of Bands at Miramar High School, where he revitalized the historic program by quadrupling student enrollment and consistently achieving high ratings in district and state evaluations. Prior to that appointment, Rodriguez served as the Associate Director of Bands at Blanche Ely High School, his alma mater.

Beyond the classroom, Rodriguez is active as a guest conductor, adjudicator, and clinician for numerous festivals and camps and has presented at national, state, and regional conferences. Rodriguez recently participated as an H. Robert Reynolds Conducting Institute Fellow during the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic and was previously awarded the Mike Moss Diversity Grant by the College Band Directors National Association. 

Rodriguez has earned degrees from Louisiana State University, the University of Central Florida, and Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University. Rodriguez holds memberships in the College Band Directors National Association, National Association for Music Education, Kappa Kappa Psi, and Pi Kappa Lambda. In his free time, Rodriguez enjoys cooking and spending time with his family, friends, and puppy - Clover Noelle.
