David Walsh (opera) offered a fall 2017 freshman seminar titled Violence Against Women in Opera. This seminar explores the nature and root causes of violence against women as presented in seven classic operas covering a wide period of operatic cultural history. The class style is a combination of lecture, discussion, and viewing insightful productions of the respective operas and illuminates how opera is uniquely suited to addressing this particular issue. The operas studied include The Marriage of Figaro, La Traviata, Carmen, Madama Butterfly, Street Scene, The Rape of Lucretia, and Susannah.
