Student Chad Hutchinson Named Finalist for American Prize in Opera Conducting

Chad Hutchinson (DMA, orchestral conducting, student of Mark Russell Smith) was named as one of the 5 finalists for the American Prize in Opera Conducting in the College/University division. Nominated for his performance with University of Opera Theatre in Carlisle Floyd's Susannah, Hutchinson is one of only two students to be in the Finals. He will lead four performances of the upcoming University Opera Theatre production of Puccini's Suor Angelica while his teacher, Mark Russell Smith, will lead Gianni Schicci. Away from school, Hutchinson is in his second year as the assistant conductor of the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra and music director of the South Dakota Symphony Youth Orchestra.
