Student Chad Hutchinson Named Winner in The American Prize for Opera Conducting
Chad Hutchinson (DMA, orchestral conducting, student of Mark Russell Smith) was recently named the 3rd place winner in The American Prize for Opera Conducting in the College/University Division. Nominated for his performance of the University Opera Theatre's Susannah by Carlisle Floyd, Hutchinson was one of two students to be a finalist competing against a field dominated by tenured professors. He will lead four performances of Suor Angelica with members of the University Symphony Orchestra and University Opera Theatre this week. Away from the University, Hutchinson is in his second season as the assistant conductor for the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra and music director of the South Dakota Symphony Youth Orchestra.
