What's the big idea?

LinkedIn recently published a list of 41 big ideas that will change our world in 2023. The list is a compilation from the platform’s top voices and creators, weighing in on the trends that they believe will define the coming year in the workplace and beyond. It’s a diverse collection, too – the growth of multi-modal artificial intelligence, a surge in climate-controlled indoor farms, the evolution and adoption of cryptocurrency, a new model of “trust-based” philanthropy that removes intricate reviews and application processes. Those of us in higher ed should be especially interested in big idea #11, “the school-to-work path will be turned on its head.”

As we consider these predictions and uncertainties for what the new year will bring, I think one ‘big idea’ remains indisputable: the world needs analytical thinkers. We need problem-solvers and ethical decision-makers. We need folks who can leverage their digital literacy skills, who contribute to their communities in profound ways, who lead with innovation, curiosity, and empathy. What’s the big idea? We need the liberal arts to generate and navigate the big ideas of today and tomorrow.

In CLA, I want us to aspire to be best in the world in all that we do, and also best for the world in all that we do. Through our research, instruction, and community engagement, we aim to meet this purpose of doing the most good we can do for others. And you, our alumni, amplify that work. You live out this promise and value of a liberal arts education every day through your work, your volunteerism, your charitable and civic work. You do work that makes a meaningful difference in your community and improves the lives of many.

Thank you for your investments in and support of the college, I am grateful for all that you make possible. Please know you can always reach me at cladean@umn.edu, perhaps to share your own suggestion for a big idea for the new year. You can also see what I’m commenting on at @cla_coleman on Twitter. However you may celebrate this holiday season, I hope it is full of joyful memories and the promise of wonderful days ahead.
