University of Minnesota alumni and campaign volunteers Robert P. Sands, ‘62 B.A., ‘65 J.D., and Sally Glassberg Sands, ‘77 Ph.D., have made a $7.4 million estate commitment to keep a liberal arts education affordable for promising students. This brings the Sands’ total giving to the College of Liberal Arts (CLA) to $12.57 million—all for need-based scholarships.

“We believe ‘access’ is a key word, along with ‘affordable,’” says Robert. “More than ever, Minnesota needs to provide access to affordable, quality education, both through public taxpayer support and through private voluntary giving. We’re pleased and proud to support scholarships at CLA.”

Established in 2016, the Sands Road to Completion Fund provides emergency tuition relief for CLA students facing unexpected financial hardship. To date, this fund has supported 19 students. Total giving to this fund will exceed $3.8 million.

The Robert P. & Sally G. Sands Scholarship, established in 2005, provides scholarships to full-time CLA students with academic promise and financial need. More than 100 Sands Scholarships have been awarded. Total giving to this fund will exceed $8.76 million.

“I am forever grateful to the Sands family for the scholarship I received,” says Goazong Khang (pictured with the couple in the photo above), a CLA junior this year. “It’s motivating me to work harder, to pursue my goals. They have inspired me, and I cannot wait until the day that I can give back as well.”
