As a public defender, Edward Cleary successfully argued a precedent-setting case to the US Supreme Court, RAV v. City of Saint Paul, which he later chronicled in an award-winning book. He was then appointed by Minnesota’s Supreme Court to direct the Office of Lawyers Professional Responsibility, and then ascended as a jurist to the Second District Court and later to the Minnesota Court of Appeals where he now presides as Chief Judge. He has taught emerging attorneys at the U of M Law School and has also served on various bar associations and state legal boards.
