Outreach is at the center of the department’s mission in observance of our discipline’s grounding in the struggles of Chicana/o/x and Latina/o/x peoples for cultural, social and political justice. Our scholarship, teaching, and departmental programming aim to advance that goal in view of enacting tangible systemic change in our society and its institutions, including higher education. Outreach also works internally with our departmental students and student services organizations on campus. To mitigate the divide between the university and the everyday realities of the communities, we strive to build mutually reciprocal relationships that honor the agency of its members and hold us accountable in continuing the struggle —la lucha—to achieve social justice with Latina/o/x groups.
