MA/PhD Application Instructions

For the MA/PhD program, we expect: a minimum of 18 undergraduate credits or the equivalent in theatre arts, a 3.0 grade point average, and a US bachelor's degree or comparable foreign degree from a recognized college or university.

Admission into the PhD or PhD-Track Program is dependent upon a review by a committee of the faculty in the Theatre Historiography Program. The committee examines grade point averages, GRE scores, resumes, letters of recommendation, statement of career objectives, and the submitted samples of research writing. In order to be admitted to the MA/PhD program, you must have a working knowledge/reading proficiency of at least one foreign language (or a sign language). A computer language will not satisfy this requirement. Please indicate in your personal statement what foreign language you are presenting to fulfill this criteria for admission, and whether this is an acquired language through school/college, or your “native” or first language. To be considered for the prestigious Graduate School Fellowship, all materials and GRE scores must be submitted by January 5. Personal interviews are not required of PhD or PhD-track applicants.

Note: The department does not accept applications for “MA only” students. Those applying for the PhD program directly from baccalaureate programs should apply to the PhD track.

Please note that we admit graduate students for fall semester only. Only under unusual circumstances will students be allowed to begin their studies at another time during the academic year.
