Student Spotlight: Veronica Broskovetz
Veronica Broskovetz is a junior majoring in political science and journalism with minors in teaching English as a second language and Spanish. Read the below Q&A to learn more about her and her experience as a political science student.
Why did you choose to study political science?
I have always enjoyed a good debate and political topics were always at the core of them. I also grew up abroad, so international relations and how U.S. foreign policy influences other countries has been of interest to me for quite some time.
What has been your favorite POL course at the University of Minnesota?
POL 1026: U.S. Foreign Policy.
What advice would you give to prospective political science students?
Don't be afraid to put yourself out there and apply to whatever peaks your interest. It's basic advice, but you'll never know the opportunities that could appear if you don't! Also, never run away from a good political discussion.
What do you hope to do after graduation? How has studying political science prepared you?
In the long term, I want to be a foreign service officer; however, after graduation, I hope to work within the Department of State or Peace Corps to build experience for the foreign service officer position. Studying political science has allowed me to better articulate my words and thoughts as well as to reconstruct an argument, which is crucial within the foreign service given the amount of memos, briefings, and general intercultural communication they must do.
