Not Getting Lost in Translation: The Art and Challenges of Translating Medieval Sources

About the Lecture

Dr. Graham Loud (Professor Emeritus of Medieval History, University of Leeds) will share his philosophy of why we need wider provision of translated medieval sources, not least the value of doing these for the translator; what a good medieval translation should strive for, and what to avoid; and some of the challenges and pitfalls inherent in the art of translation - with examples drawn from his own work on eleventh - and twelfth-century south Italian chronicles.

About the Speaker 

Dr. Graham A. Loud is Professor Emeritus of Medieval History at the University of Leeds, where he taught from 1978 to 2019. His particular field of research is the history of southern Italy from the tenth to the thirteenth centuries, and also Staufen Germany. His most recent books are The Social World of the Abbey of Cava, c. 1020-1300 (2021) and Frederick Barbarossa (2025). His Monasticism and Renewal in Southern Italy. The Montecassino Chronicle of Leo Marsicanus, c. 529-1075 will appear in the 'Manchester Medieval Sources; series in February 2026.
