Assistant Editor, Journal of Early Modern History
The Center for Premodern Studies and the editors of the Journal of Early Modern History announce a call for applications for the position of Assistant Editor. This is a 50% appointment (20 hours/week, PhD Research Assistant, Job Code 9529) during the 9-month academic year, and a 25% appointment (10 hours/week) over the summer. JEMH is a leading international journal in the field of early modern studies and the official journal of the University of Minnesota Center for Premodern Studies. It is published by Brill and releases six issues per year.
The primary supervisor for this role is JEMH Editor Dr. Molly Warsh (History, University of Pittsburgh). Local support for this role includes the UMN-based members of the editorial team and CPS Associate Director, Lydia Garver. Much of the work of this role can be done remotely. The feasibility of this role being held by someone working outside the state of Minnesota would need to be assessed on a case by case basis.
Primary responsibilities of the position include:
- Regular, prompt, and professional correspondence with the international editorial team
- Updating the Notion software the editors use to track publications and workflow
- Copy-editing final drafts for submission to the publisher
- Updating the JEMH bluesky account promptly for each new publication

This position is open to any graduate student in the College of Liberal Arts who will be ABD by August 2025. However, the graduate student’s home department must commit to covering half of the cost of the 9-month academic year appointment. The Department of History has already committed to providing this support for ABD History students within their funding band who wish to apply for this position.
- Candidates should have experience copy editing and familiarity with early modern studies or the discipline of history.
- Candidates who can hold this position for more than one year are preferred.

Pay & Benefits
Graduate students hired as research assistants are in positions covered by the current Graduate Labor Union-United Electrical, Radio, and Machine Workers of America Local 1105 and UMN Contract.
Pay for this position will meet the CLA minimum wage for GA positions. This is currently $27.96 per hour. Pay rate will change to reflect college increases. Pay will follow the University payroll calendar with payments issued every two weeks.
