Since 2015, the University of Minnesota Graduate Programs in Psychology (Psychology, Developmental Psychology, and Educational Psychology) have proudly offered an annual event to bring transparency, accessibility, and inclusivity to graduate admissions in psychology. Our next live, full-day virtual event will be held on Tuesday, May 19, 2026. Applications are accepted annually from January 15 to March 1.

Demystifying Graduate Admissions in Psychology (De-GAP) aims to bridge the gaps between:

  • How applicants describe their preparation and what faculty reviewers look for in competitive applications.
  • Unique preparatory experiences and the training demands of doctoral programs.
  • Expectations of graduate school and the realities of the doctoral student experience.
  • Preconceptions of specializations within psychology and their research methods and scope.

De-GAP provides a coordinated set of online resources, faculty mentorship opportunities, and interactive Zoom sessions that:

  • Bring transparency to the development of competitive graduate school applications.
  • Improve the accessibility of information about the doctoral programs offered by the Department of Psychology, the Institute of Child Development, and the Department of Educational Psychology.
  • Foster inclusivity by centering diverse viewpoints and perspectives on the admissions process.

De-GAP is hosted by the Department of Psychology in collaboration with the Institute of Child Development and the Department of Educational Psychology, who serve as co-sponsors. We accept applications from individuals interested in the programs offered by any of these “Tri-Psych” departments.

All prospective applicants to UMN doctoral programs in psychology who meet the eligibility requirements listed below are welcome and encouraged to apply. We especially welcome applications from individuals who have experienced barriers to higher education and/or who are seeking help demystifying the hidden curriculum of the doctoral admissions process, including those whose background reflects a diversity of viewpoints and experiences historically underrepresented in the field of psychology.

Acceptance to De-GAP does not guarantee admission to any graduate program. To be considered for possible admission to a UMN graduate program, De-GAP participants must apply via the Graduate School’s online application portal and undergo the program’s standard application review process.

  • “The continued investment of [the University of Minnesota’s] Tri-Psych departments on increasing and retaining diverse students is one of its greatest strengths.
