1. Congrats Fall 2020 Graduates!
We want to extend our sincere and hearty congratulations to each of you on your accomplishment. We know that this day in December may lack the anticipated ceremonious events that typically surround a graduation day. Our hope is that each of you will find a way to celebrate your milestone with loved ones and friends and that you will look back on your time at the University of Minnesota with pride and a major sense of accomplishment. Please accept our warm wishes on the next steps of your journey, wherever that may lead!
2. Office Scheduling Updates
Psychology Undergraduate Advising will be closed on Thursday, 12/31, and Friday, 1/1. Additionally, our office will be closing early on Thursday, 1/7, and Friday, 1/8 at 2:30 pm. Feel free to email us with questions and we will get back to you as soon as possible!

3. PSY 3896: Internship in Psychology - 1-4 Credits
Make your internship experience count toward your PSY Major! The class credits (1-4 credits) are based on the number of hours that you work at your internship during the Spring 2021 semester. The online course assignments are a complement to your learning in your internship setting. Example sites from the past include Minneapolis Public Schools, People Serving People, Sexual Violence Center, Tubman, and the Walk-In Counseling Center. 4. *Credit or Volunteer* Undergraduate Research Opportunity in the Social Interaction Lab
We are seeking motivated, dedicated, and detail-oriented students to join Dr. Jeff Simpson's Social Interaction Lab for the Spring 2021 term. We will be hiring research assistants to help us code videos of romantic couples' support and conflict discussions. All coding will be completed remotely for the Spring of 2021. RAs will participate in weekly project coding meetings and biweekly meetings that are intended to help RAs better understand current research in psychology and gain applicable professional development skills. Prospective research assistants should be able to commit approximately 9 hours of work per week throughout the semester. 5. *Volunteer* Undergraduate Research Opportunity in Child Psychiatry
We are looking for 3-4 students to volunteer in Dr. Meredith Gunlicks-Stoessel’s adolescent depression research lab. Students will be working primarily on a research project that is evaluating the effectiveness of personalized interventions for adolescent depression delivered in a community mental health care setting. Responsibilities will include administering data collection procedures with adolescents and parents, coding open-ended survey responses, and data entry. Qualified candidates must be highly motivated, able to work independently, detail-oriented, and willing to develop new skills as the need arises. Excellent communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills; organizational skills; and comfort using basic computer programs such as Google Docs, Microsoft Word, Excel, and web applications are also required. Candidates must be pursuing a degree in Psychology or a related field and be willing to commit 4 hours per week for the academic year (some hours will be 3:00 pm- 7:00 pm CST during the week and occasional weekends). 6. *Credit* Directed Research in Quantitative Psychology
Dr. Marcoulides and Allie Cooperman are currently recruiting undergraduate students to participate in PSY 5993, Directed Research in Psychology for the Spring 2021 semester. This directed research opportunity will introduce students to research in psychology that utilizes a variety of statistical approaches for answering important research questions, and to the field of Quantitative Psychology more broadly. We will focus on reading, discussing, and critiquing research that examines issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Topics and readings will vary and will largely depend on the interests of the students enrolled. Potential topics may include issues related to fairness in test development, machine learning approaches for risk assessment, and statistical methods for the development and evaluation of interventions for at-risk groups. 7. *Credit* PSY 5993 Forensic Psychophysiology Seminar with Professor Iacono
In 2003, the National Academy of Sciences published a report reviewing the scientific basis of polygraph examinations and other lie detection techniques. In this seminar, we will examine how the field has evolved since then by reviewing and critiquing the scientific literature published since the NAS report. This seminar focuses on the validity of forensic lie detection, an area of applied psychology that intersects with law and public policy. If you are interested in learning more about this section of PSY 5993, please e-mail a copy of your transcript, a resume, and a paragraph explaining your interest in this topic to Dr. Iacono at email@example.com.
8. Personal Statement Consultations for UMN International Students
The Personal Statement is an important part of the graduate or professional school program application. UMN students have an opportunity to virtually meet with a personal statement consultant to review this aspect of their application. There are two ways to participate; making a live 30 minutes Zoom appointment in Google Calendar, or submitting your Personal Statement, and receiving a recording video of feedback you can view on your own time. 9. Emerging Black Child Development Scholars Program
This program is called the Emerging Black Child Development Scholars Program and it is designed to support and encourage undergraduate and post-bac Black scholars interested in pursuing a doctoral degree in fields related to child development. This will be a half-day program that will take place on Friday, January 29th, 2021 from 12:00 pm- 3:30 pm CST and will include panels on maximizing research experiences and effective networking, one-on-one meetings with grad student mentors to get personalized feedback on personal statements, and small group meetings with senior Black Caucus faculty to ask about what makes a competitive applicant. We are soliciting applications for Black juniors, seniors, or post-bac scholars who would be interested in pursuing a doctoral degree in child development who you think would be interested in being a part of this program. 10. Job Search Communities for December 2020 Grads
Join a CLA Recent Grad (December 2020) Job Search Community! These small groups will launch the week of Jan. 18 and will meet for 60 minutes for five weeks via zoom. By joining a community you'll get structured job support from a career counselor, fellow CLA recent grads, and an employer/alumni volunteer will visit a few sessions to provide their perspective and help with interview prep and practice. 13. Social Developmental Neuroscience Fellowship Opportunities for Seniors and Recent Graduates
The Marcus Autism Center, in conjunction with the Emory University School of Medicine and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, is offering five fellowships: the Cohen Fellowship in Developmental Social Neuroscience, the Simons Fellowship in Computational Neuroscience, the Education Sciences Fellowship, the Clinical Research Fellowship and the Marcus Fellowship in Speech Science and Engineering. Students who will receive a bachelor’s degree by June 2021 will be eligible for the positions. The fellowships will commence in July 2021, and they are 2 years in duration. 14. Summer Camp Counselor
At Camp TEKO we are looking for counselors, lifeguards, and specialists! You must be entering 12th grade or older but you do not need to be Jewish to apply for these positions. The TEKO staff will get to work at 8:15 AM, spend the day at camp (on Lake Minnetonka), and head home at 5:30 PM. Salary is determined based on experience and position. We are looking for fun, creative, and open-minded staff who love working with kids and are able to make responsible choices regarding COVID-19 precautions. 15. Undergraduate Summer Internship Program - Columbia-WHO Center for Global Mental Health
The Columbia-WHO Center for Global Mental Health hosts a competitive summer internship for rising senior undergraduates interested in the growing field of global mental health. Students will be exposed to a wide range of didactic seminars and experiential learning opportunities will be mentored by 1-3 departmental faculty focused on various global mental health initiatives and will gain extensive exposure for networking and shadowing within the healthcare research environment. The summer internship runs for 8 weeks, with students working 4 days a week with the Columbia-WHO Center for Global Mental Health. The 2021 summer internship is planned to be completely remote/virtual with no requirement to travel (BOLD) to Columbia University. If public health recommendations permit, there is potential for a brief three-day, an in-person program in which interns will have a choice to participate in person or remotely based on preference and access. 16. Lindahl Academic Center - Psychology Subject Tutor
The Lindahl Academic Center is hiring peer tutors for the Spring Semester 2021 and beyond. These positions are 100% remote (via Zoom) and paid hourly. Schedules are built around your own submitted availability. Tutors will meet with small groups of students on a regularly recurring schedule to review course-specific material in a variety of Psychology Centered Academic Disciplines.
