I work with Dr. Moin Syed on the factors that contribute to the academic persistence of Native American college students.
How has the University of Minnesota helped you?
The University of Minnesota has provided me with numerous opportunities—from faculty mentoring, conducting my own research, and making community connections—that have all contributed to my success as a graduate student. Since I have been a student here, I have been awarded two fellowships (The DOVE Fellowship and the Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship).
What do you like about living in the Twin Cities?
I have lived on the reservation my entire life, so it was important to me to be able to maintain my cultural identity when I moved to the Twin Cities. In Minneapolis, there is a large Native American community (Little Earth of United Tribes) that I volunteer with on weeknights. It is a place that I can go and connect with people who share similar cultural values and traditions as me. That is my favorite part about living in the Twin Cities.
