In a recent article by the Minnesota DailyLiza Meredith, faculty, commented on young people’s experiences online, leading them to unfortunately confuse and over-identify with mental health conditions. According to Meredith, young people have many positive reasons to use social media, including to explore themselves, their interests, and their identity. They may also use social media to foster connections and enrich themselves. However, Meredith explained that comparing themselves to others and creating an idea of themselves based on what they see online can be problematic in that they may miss important nuances of complex identities and diagnoses.
