Robert Krueger, our Newest Regents Professor

Robert (Bob) Krueger, faculty, has been named a Regents Professor at the University of Minnesota, the highest recognition the University bestows on its faculty. This tremendous honor reflects not only a distinguished career but a sustained and far-reaching impact via one’s research, teaching, and contributions to the public good.

Over the course of his career, Krueger’s influence has been undeniable. Some examples of many include:

• He is among the 100 most highly cited psychologists in the 150+ year history of psychology based on his h-index (h-indexes measure both the productivity and citation impact of a researcher's publications).
• His research has been cited over 101,000 times to date, with an h-index of 171. Compared to scholars across all fields of science, Krueger’s citation impact (according to Clarivate Analytics Highly Cited Researcher) is among the top 1% in the world. In most fields, scholars who achieve h-indexes of 40-50 are considered to have had a demonstrably major impact during their careers.
• He served as Director of Clinical Training (DCT) from 2012 to 2018 for the Clinical Science and Psychopathology Research (CSPR) area in the Department of Psychology, which is APA- and PCSAS-accredited, and he led the effort to establish PCSAS accreditation for the area.  He also teaches the area’s core course in psychopathology.
• He is a founding member of the Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology (HiTOP) Consortium and served as the founding president of the HiTOP Society.  HiTOP is a data-driven mental health framework created by a consortium of scientists and clinicians that organizes mental health disorders using a spectrum approach,  rather than using putatively distinct categories. HiTOP is meant to serve as a scientific alternative to longstanding and traditional diagnostic systems like the DSM.

With this recognition, Krueger joins a distinguished group of UMN Psychology faculty who have preceded him in receiving this highest of honors: Ellen Berscheid, William (Bill) Iacono, Matt McGue, and Paul Meehl.

All told, Krueger’s work continues to influence not only how psychopathology is studied but how it is understood more broadly, opening new pathways for research, practice, and the next generation of scholars. Join us in congratulating Regents Professor Krueger!
