A Transdiagnostic Approach to Mental Health Diagnosis

Drs. Whitney Ringwald and Sylia Wilson

Faculty members Sylia Wilson and Whitney Ringwald recently published a paper entitled “Transdiagnostic Psychopathology Research Requires Comprehensive, Lifespan Coverage of Psychological Symptoms and Function and Ability: Commentary on Caspi et al. (2026),” in which they summarized and commented on a prior study on the diagnosis of mental health disorders. Although the original paper, “Why Psychopathology Research Should Avoid Studying One Mental Health Disorder at a Time: An Intergenerational and Developmental Evidence Base for Understanding “p”,” detailed a comprehensive approach to studying psychopathology, Wilson and her collaborators asserted that our understanding of psychopathology will be incomplete without ensuring that the full range of human experience, including strengths and abilities alongside clinical symptoms, is incorporated.
