Psychology Advising Announcements & Events

1. Psychology Advising Closed for Thanksgiving

Psychology Advising will be closed Thursday, November 23rd and Friday, November 24th for the Thanksgiving Holiday. If you have questions for advising, please email psyadvis@umn.edu and we will get back to you when we return to the office on Monday. Have a great weekend, and safe travels.

2. Graduate School: Mental Health Info Session

Wondering about graduate programs that lead to mental health related professions? Join Psychology Undergraduate Advising and Child Psychology Undergradate Advising at the Graduate School: Mental Health Info Session on Thursday, November 30th.

You will have the opportunity to hear from admission representatives from 4 local universities. Each will discuss their degrees & career fields in a large group setting. Following the panel discussion, students will have a chance to interact with program representatives individually at tables. Our panelists will represent master's degree programs in Social Work, Counseling Psychology, School Psychology, and Marriage & Family Therapy. Learn about the differences between various grad programs, how licensure works, what various career paths within mental health look like, and more! 3. New Psi Chi Membership Fees Due December 1st

Were you accepted to Psi Chi this semester? Fees for new Psi Chi members are due Friday, December 1st. Make a check out to Psi Chi for $65, and be sure to include your first and last name, student ID number and x500. Checks can be turned in to the dropbox outside Psychology Advising (N108 Elliott Hall)

5. EPSY 5200: Community Engaged Research Experiences in Educational Psych

Spring 2018: Tuesdays, 2:30-5:25pm, Instructor: Dr. Keisha Varma

Are you interested in gaining research experience working with school aged children, teachers, and families? Would you like a chance to learn new research skills as you conduct a commu- nity engaged project? Are you interested in how students learn? Do you want to consider the role of culture, ethnicity, and family in teaching and learning? If you answered YES! to any of these questions, then this is the course for you! In this new, three-credit course, you will work with your peers and faculty members from the College of Education and Human Development to engage in community-based participatory research experiences in diverse K-12 classrooms in the Minneapolis and St. Paul Public School Districts. 6. PA 3481: Cedar Riverside: Where the World Meets MN - J-Term immersion course!

M-F, 8:30am-12:30pm, January 2nd - 12th

The 3-credit PA 3481: Cedar Riverside Neighborhood; Where the World Meets Minnesota is an immersion course in our Cedar Riverside neighborhood that parallels the immersion experience of study abroad. The course encourages civic engagement and will provide opportunity to learn and work in the Cedar Riverside community while examining questions of leadership, power, cultural diversity and social change. Students will participate in class-based discussion seminars, neighborhood excursions and community work. Throughout the immersion experience, students are challenged to question, think, and respond thoughtfully to current issues facing the Cedar-Riverside community and cultivate leadership skills. Students can expect to gain new frameworks for understanding leadership and civic engagement in a domestic cultural context, deepened skill in identifying complex problems, strategic questioning, reflection and meaning making, as well as consciousness of relationship between self, world and text/theory.

Research Opportunities

Research opportunities listed below may be volunteer, for-credit, or paid. Not all these opportunities are affiliated with the Department of Psychology. If you are receiving credit for a research experience outside the Psychology Department, you will need to check with Psychology Advising about how it will fit into your academic program.

7. Spring Undergrad Research Opportunity in the NICE lab

The Narrative, Identity, Culture and Education Lab run by Dr. Moin Syed is seeking undergraduate research assistants for Spring semester. The project will focus on identity integration for Muslim Americans. Tasks will include data collection (interviews), literature reviews, and qualitative data analysis. Please download an application from the NICE Lab website (http://nice-lab.umn.edu/content/prospective-students) and send the completed application to Ummul Kathawalla (kath0033@umn.edu). Applications will be accepted till December 1st, 2017.

8. 2018 Latino Mental Health Research Training in Mexico

Minority Health and Health Disparities International Research Training program (MHIRT) is an 11-week summer research training program designed to prepare undergraduate and pre-doctoral researchers to address disparities in mental health care of U.S. Latinos with serious mental illness. The program is comprised of an intensive one-week training seminar at USC, and a 10-week training program in Puebla México. The first phase will take place at USC and consists of research workshops by some of the top Latino Mental Health Researchers in the country. The one-week intensive seminar will serve to help trainees develop research and professional skills to reduce disparities and to motivate them to pursue advanced research degrees. In addition the seminar will provide them with a cultural orientation to facilitate a smooth transition to living and working in Mexico. Applications are due February 1, 2018. Spring break -- got plans? If you like travel, volunteering, and making new friends, The Pay it Forward tour is just for you! Organized by "Students Today, Leaders Forever", the Pay it Forward tour is travelling to San Antonio, TX on a 9 day community service trip across the country. This trip brings U of M students together to make meaningful connections, volunteer in six different cities, and even do some tourism before celebrating in San Antonio! This workshop series is focused on challenging the dominant narrative of community engagement by highlighting global perspectives, unheard international student voices, and the intersections in community engagement. 12. Become an SVC Sexual Assault Advocate

Do you want an experience that will change your life? Become a part of our social change vision and help eradicate sexual violence! We are always in need of passionate volunteers to provide direct services, answer the crisis line and respond to medical advocacies. We provide over 40 hours of advocacy training in line with state guidelines that will prepare you to join us to stand up against sexual violence. Our next training starts January 2nd and there is still time to sign up! 13. Columbia Business School 2018 Summer Research Internship Program

Columbia Business School is seeking outstanding applications for the 2018 Summer Research Internship program. The highly selective program provides an intellectually stimulating environment and introduces the interns to the world of business research. Under the guidance of Columbia Business School’s leading faculty, interns will take an active role on a research project in one of the following areas: accounting, economics, finance, marketing, management, decision sciences, operations, and data analytics. This is a multi-disciplinary program and candidates from all majors are encouraged to apply. To apply, please fill out the application form. The Application Deadline is 11:59pm EST on March 1, 2018.
