Psychology Advising Announcements

1. Psychology Junior/Senior Check-In

Do you have between 75-90 credits this semester? If so, it's time for your Junior/Senior Check In! This one-on-one appointment with a psychology advisor will check your progress towards your major to make sure you're on the right track to graduate on time, connect you with career and grad school resources to begin making your post-college dreams a reality, and allow you a chance to give us feedback about your experiences as a psychology major.

Psychology Student Organizations

All students interested in Psychology are welcome to participate in Psychology student organizations. No previous participation or membership is required. If you're interested, please attend!

2. Apply for Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology!

Psi Chi is the International National Honor Society in Psychology. It's a great way to improve your resume and become eligible for new opportunities within the field of psychology. We are taking applications now, and they are due March 28th. Visit the Psychology Student Organization page to find out more about becoming a member.

3. Ted Talk Night with Psych Club/Psi Chi

Wednesday, February 21st, 5:00pm

Psych Club will be hosting their second meeting of the year on February 21st at 5pm in N227 (Skinner Room). We will be watching and discussing interesting Ted Talks. Feel free to submit your own ideas for Ted Talks!

A reminder that meeting times for this semester will be biweekly on Wednesday nights at 5pm. Look for emails on later events such as volunteering, potlucks, and grad planning. For additional information on what the club is up to email psichi@umn.edu.

5. Social Justice Fair - Human Rights Student Association

Thursday, February 22nd, 7:00-8:00pm 
President's Room at Coffman Memorial Union

The University's Human Rights Student Association is hosting a Social Justice Fair on Thursday, February 22nd from 7pm-8pm in the President’s Room at Coffman Memorial Union. Student groups relating to social justice and local twin cities’ social justice organizations will be at the fair. They will have information on their organization and how to get involved in various ways such as being a student leader, a volunteer or an intern. Check out their facebook event at UMN HRSA!

6. U of M Job & Internship Fair

Monday, February 26th, 10:00-4:00pm 
Minneapolis Convention Center

The University of Minnesota offers the biggest student career fair in Minnesota! The fair is open to all U of M undergraduates and recent alumni. Disability accommodations available upon request. 7. CLA Careers in Healthcare Alumni-Student Networking Event

Tuesday, February 27th

Optional open networking to follow until about 8:30 p.m.

At this event hosted by the CLA Student Board and CLA Alumni Society, students get will get a chance to meet alumni of any occupation in the healthcare or medical industries - Any alumni and professionals who work in administration, operations, teaching, as medical/healthcare practitioners, or in any capacity for a health or medical organization are welcome. Dinner and parking voucher will be provided.

8. Careers in Law Fair

Wednesday, February 28th, 11:00-2:00pm: Willey Hall Atrium

Come join University Student Legal Services, Pre-Law Society, and CLA Career Services for the annual Careers in Law Fair!

The fair will be held Wednesday, February 28th, 11am - 2pm in the Willey Hall Atrium. This is a great opportunity to speak with representatives from law schools, government agencies, paralegal programs, nonprofits, criminal justice organizations, political offices, and LSAT prep programs. Stop by any time to learn and ask questions about graduate school requirements, volunteer programs, internship experiences, and professions in the legal community.

This fair is not only for students considering law school, but for anyone considering a career related to the legal field. Registration is not required!

9. Psychology & Research in Madrid Summer 2018 Deadline Extension!

Application Deadline is now March 15th!

Students interested in the courses only track of this program are able to apply through March 15th. The courses only track allows students to take Introduction to Biological Psychology and Cross-Cultural Psychology for a total of 6 credits.

The program has been developed in partnership with the University of Minnesota's Psychology Department and the Fundación Ortega-Marañon in Madrid. Students live in homestays or residence halls and take courses at our centrally located study center. For eligibility requirements and more information please visit the program webpage.

10. National Student Exchange Deadline

Priority Application Deadline is February 21st!

Do something different next year! Exchange to another school in the US, Canada, Guam, Puerto Rico or the US Virgin Islands for a summer, semester, or year. There are over 170 campuses to choose from. Where do you want to go?

• Someplace warm? We have schools in Hawaii, Guam, US Virgin Islands, and the southern U.S.
• Mountains? We have schools in Alaska, Montana, Colorado, and Utah.
• More diversity? There are HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) and HSIs (Hispanic/Latino Serving Institutions) and other more multicultural campuses.
• Bigger cities? We have schools in NYC, Boston, Philadelphia, Miami, and LA.

NSE is AFFORDABLE! Either you'll pay U of M tuition while on exchange OR you'll pay in-state tuition to your host campus (which is oftentimes cheaper than U of M tuition). 11. Asian American Resistance & Creative Clap Backs

Join the Asian Pacific American Resource Center for a powerful evening of learning! Using Asian American stereotypes in the media as an easy and visual entry point into Asian American history, we will examine connections between Asian American media stereotypes, historical anxieties, and what contemporary Asian American creatives are doing to clap back. This history of resistance is more relevant than ever today in this time of Islamophobia, anti-immigrant sentiment, Black Lives Matter, and “fake news.” The challenge is to become critical readers, savvy media consumers, and activist content creators. 12. Working on a Research Project? Peer Research Consultants Can Help!

Need assistance with a research project this semester? The Peer Research Consultants are available for one-on-one consultations with students. The Peer Research Consultants (a.k.a library research tutors) help students develop research strategies, narrow or expand their topics, find scholarly or academic articles, and critically evaluate the information they find. PRCs are available in drop-ins or by appointment at various locations, including SMART Learning Commons in Walter Library and MCAE in Appleby Hall. 13. U of M Job and Internship Fair Preparation Workshops

Do you want to attend the UMN Job & Internship Fair on Feb. 26th but you're not sure what to do when you're there? Attend this workshop for answers and advice from CLA Career Services staff and employers. We'll tell you about the employers attending and how to conduct research on those organizations and their available jobs and internships. A few employers attending the fair will be at the workshop to answer your questions. Tips include how to dress, what to bring with you to the fair, and how to quickly make a good impression. 15. Camp Akeela - Hiring for Summer

Camp Akeela is an overnight camp in Vermont that creates a warm, supportive community for children who struggle socially. Most of the campers have been diagnosed with Asperger's or a non-verbal learning disorder. Others are undiagnosed, but "quirky" and struggle to connect with their peers. Akeela's small, supportive community helps campers improve their social skills, make friends, gain self-confidence and have fun! Staff members are primarily college and grad student in the fields of psychology, education, special education, PT, OT, SLP, social work, outdoor education, etc. Staff will not be providing "therapy" in the traditional sense, but will be a key part of a program that integrates a therapeutic approach to recreation and community living. Staff will have the opportunity to work first-hand with children and see the practical applications of their studies, while providing an incredible, life-changing camp experience.

Peer Advisors work in the resource room at CLA Career Services providing assistance to a diverse population of students, in all of the above areas, on a drop-in basis.
