Psychology Undergraduate Spring Semester Town HallThursday, February 25th, 2021, 11:00 am- 12:00 pm CST The Psychology Department is hosting the Spring 21 Town Hall for undergraduate psych students. The goal of these town halls is to connect students directly with the Department of Psychology leadership. If you are interested in attending, please fill out the Google Form to RSVP. The Zoom link will be sent out to those who RSVP in advance. If you are unable to attend this event, you can leave comments/questions in the form; feedback will be shared anonymously at the Town Hall. The town hall won't be recorded, however, meeting minutes will be shared out afterward. Meeting minutes for the Fall 20 Town Hall can be found here. 2. Get to Know Your Faculty: Connections in Clinical!Tuesday, March 9th, 2021, time TBD Exciting news! By popular demand, Dr. Bonnie Klimes-Dougan has been selected as our next faculty for our event ‘Get to Know Your Faculty’. Connect with our featured faculty, Dr. Klimes-Dougan, on a personal and academic level. Dr. Klimes-Dougan runs the Research in Adolescent Depression (RAD) Laboratory. Her research focuses on the neurobiology of mood disorders in adolescents. She is particularly interested in analyzing the risk factors associated with early-stage depression and suicidal risk. Celebrating Black History Month 2021various dates in February Throughout the month of February, MCSE is proud to be working in collaboration with other university affiliates such as SUA, BSU, and the African American & African Studies Department to celebrate Blackness in the past, present, and future. A Whole Person Approach to Mental HealthThursday, February 11th, 12:00 pm- 1:00 pm CST Mental health is not something that only happens "above the neck". Mental health disorders like anxiety, depression, or ADHD affect the whole person’s health, their lifestyle, and general wellbeing. The UMN Integrative Psychiatry & Wellness team strives to bring integrative or holistic strategies alongside conventional psychiatric treatments. The goal is to treat mental health symptoms and simultaneously cultivate physical and emotional wellbeing. Dr. Zylowska will overview the Integrative Psychiatry and Wellness team’s approach. She will discuss integrative treatments such as supplements, diet modification, functional medicine, or acupuncture for mental health. Learn more and register. 5. Health Disparities Colloquium Series Department of Psychology: Racism, Biopsychosocial Mechanisms, and Racial Disparities in Health: Pathways and DestinationsThursday, February 11th, 1:00 pm- 2:00 pm CST Enrique W. Neblett, Jr., Ph.D. is a Professor of Health Behavior and Health Education at the University of Michigan School of Public Health and Associate Director of the Detroit Community-Academic Urban Research Center. Dr. Neblett is one of the leading U.S. scholars in the area of racism and health, with a particular focus on understanding how racism-related stress influences the mental and physical health of African American young people. In his newest line of research, he conducts community-based participatory research with an eye toward developing and implementing interventions, programs, and policies. RSVP and learn more. 6. Mini-Medical School COVID-19: The Way ForwardMonday, February 15th, 2021, 5:30 pm- 7:00 pm CST COVID-19: The Way Forward is an exploratory journey of emerging questions and new developments around COVID-19. As we move into a new phase of the pandemic with vaccines becoming available, we’ll discuss real-time updates and what we believe lies ahead. As COVID-19 vaccines continue to roll out, learn about the science behind the different vaccines being produced in the U.S. and around the world. During session 1 of Mini-Medical School: COVID-19: The Way Forward, University experts will discuss how the vaccines were developed, their safety and efficacy, vaccine resistance, and new variants of COVID-19. Research9. U of M Multicultural Summer Research Opportunities Program (MSROP)The Multicultural Summer Research Opportunities Program provides the opportunity for talented undergraduate students to seriously prepare for study and acceptance to graduate school through the development of strong relationships with faculty, access to a series of preparation seminars, and intensive research experience. This program includes a $4,000 stipend and runs from May 31st to August 6th, online. Learn more and apply! 10. *Volunteer* Internship with Clinical and Research ExperienceThe Center for Practice Transformation in the School of Social Work is seeking highly motivated volunteer student interns to assist with community-based research. CPT is currently conducting outcomes research with a large substance use disorder treatment provider based in Minnesota. Student responsibilities would include participant outreach, phone-based data collection, and data entry. Qualifications include excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills; basic computer skills including use of Microsoft Excel, interest in clinical care for individuals with mental health and substance use disorders, and the ability to work remotely. Preference will be given to students who are able to commit to 12 months of involvement and have availability after 12:00 pm for 2-10 hours per week. To apply, please contact Tanya Freedland at free0165@umn.edu with a brief statement of your interest and CV or resume. 11. *Credit or Volunteer* RA Opportunities in Research on Bipolar DisordersWe are seeking two highly motivated, responsible, and detail-oriented undergraduates of sophomore or junior standing to contribute to newly funded projects in Dr. Snezana Urosevic’s lab that examines neurobehavioral abnormalities in adults with bipolar disorders (BD) at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System. Both credit and volunteer opportunities are available, while paid positions are possible only for select, experienced RAs. Opportunities across open positions include project coordination, data collection, and data management while contributing to a study examining smartphone apps’ ability to track symptom and functional changes in adults with BD and/or to a study examining new interventions for individuals at high risk for suicide during the post-discharge from an inpatient unit. Options to learn to preprocess and analyze EEG and/or MRI data also exist. Potential RAs will attend laboratory meetings and have an opportunity to develop independent research questions based on their interests and available data. Past RAs have authored poster presentations and contributed to manuscript submissions. Competitive applicants will have a strong interest in pursuing graduate-level education and an excellent academic record. If you are interested, please contact Dr. Snezana Urosevic by email at snezana.urosevic@va.gov and attach an unofficial transcript and a resume that includes information about your work and research experience, references, software skills, and knowledge. 12. *Credit or Volunteer* Research Assistant Position Available at the Minneapolis VAThe Advancing Research on Mechanisms of Resilience (ARMOR) Project is currently accepting applications to fill several Volunteer Research Assistant (unpaid) positions on-site at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center ARMOR has implemented strict policies and procedures to ensure the safety of on-site staff and volunteers during COVID-19. The ARMOR Project, led by co-principal investigators Drs. Melissa Polusny and Christopher Erbes, offers the opportunity to join an active team of investigators, including Drs. Scott Sponheim, Nick Davenport, and Shmuel Lissek focused on studying processes contributing to resilience in military personnel and veterans as well as developing and testing novel interventions for PTSD. Research assistants who join the ARMOR Project will receive extensive training and gain hands-on experience conducting a longitudinal cohort study of resilience that includes a laboratory component. For more information about this study, please visit the ARMOR Project website. Although not a requirement, candidates who are willing and available to volunteer time to the lab during some evening hours (4:30 pm- 8:30 pm) and on weekend days are preferred. We are particularly looking for students with research interests in stress, resilience, and anxiety-related processes, and/or interests in working with military personnel. Scholarships & Awards14. Psychology Engagement AwardAre you participating in an internship here or abroad this spring semester? Or engaging in a learning opportunity that takes you outside of the classroom for a unique experience? The Department of Psychology's Donor Awards for Psychology Undergraduate Engagement are available to support you! The purpose of these awards is to encourage and support psychology majors who engage in learning experiences beyond the University campus and classroom environments (i.e. unpaid internships, volunteer experiences, study abroad containing a psych-related internship or research component, etc.). Up to three awards of $500 will be offered for Spring 2020. The application deadline is February 15th. For details about the awards and application materials, visit our webpage. 15. Psychology Mortensen and Other Scholarships for Current CLA StudentsThe Department of Psychology is proud to offer Junita J. Mortensen Scholarships for psychology undergraduate students. Students may receive these awards in addition to any other College of Liberal Arts award only if financial need has been demonstrated. Each year several academic scholarships and one study abroad scholarship, each in the amount of $1,000, are awarded to undergraduate psychology students to support their education and academic enhancement within the discipline. Diversity Fellowship at the Minnesota Population CenterThe Diversity Fellowship at the Minnesota Population Center at the University of Minnesota is designed to help recruit undergraduate and graduate students to work with MPC member faculty and staff on demographic research projects or IPUMS data infrastructure projects. Benefits include research experience, mentorship, and a paid stipend for the summer. Johnson ScholarshipThis scholarship was created to honor Alfred I. Johnson who was a Regent of the University and Speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives. The selected students commit to completing 400 hours in an off-campus public service internship. This scholarship provides students with a demonstrated interest in public affairs a stipend for their internships. Scholarship amounts may vary from year to year. Applicants must show evidence of a strong interest in public affairs, with an intention to pursue a career or avocational activities in public affairs, including any kind of community volunteer activity, organizing to affect public policy, service on government advisory committees, and service in elective offices. Students are not expected to have an internship confirmed at the time of application but they must obtain a public service internship to receive the scholarship. NEW CLA Scholarship for Undergraduate ResearchCLA is partnering with UROP to offer research scholarships in the amount of $1,500 to CLA students. These awards are offered through the UROP program. Community Engagement Scholars ProgramThe Community Engagement Scholars Program (CESP) is a program for students who want to make a commitment to community engagement during their undergraduate experience. Students complete volunteer hours, engage in reflective workshops and complete a 1 credit senior capstone project. Because of the rigorous nature of the program, students are also recognized by the board of regents with a notation on their official transcript and a medal of distinction. The program is open to all undergraduate students in every major and college. Learn more and apply. 20. Clinical Research Assistant - Nathan Kline Institute for Psychiatric ResearchThe Clinical Research Department at the Nathan Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research (NKI) in Orangeburg, NY invites applications for a Research Assistant position. Our research involves clinical trials and investigations into the neurobiology of psychiatric disorders including mood disorders, neurocognitive disorders, and schizophrenia. The RA will work on an experienced multi-disciplinary team of psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and research nurses. They will coordinate depression and cognitive impairment studies, with potential involvement in schizophrenia studies, under the supervision of Drs. Dan Iosifescu and Matthew Hoptman. This is an excellent opportunity for obtaining research and clinical experience prior to applying for graduate or medical school.
