Psychology Advising Announcements

1. Schedule an Appointment NOW!

If you would like to speak to a psychology advisor about course planning prior to registration, you will need to schedule an appointment. Please be aware that our appointments book out far in advance this time of year. To ensure you are able to meet with an advisor prior to your registration queue, please plan ahead and submit an appointment request at least two weeks before your registration queue time. It is also very important to notify our office if you are no longer able to make a scheduled appointment so that we are able to open those appointment times up to other students.

2. Are You Graduating Spring 2018? Save the Date to Celebrate!

Psychology majors who have applied for Spring 2018 graduation will soon be receiving an email invitation to the 2018 Psychology Undergraduate Celebration. This annual psychology undergraduate event recognizes award recipients and graduating seniors in front of peers, staff, faculty, and family for all of their accomplishments! The event will be held on campus Friday, May 4, 2017 from 4:00pm to 6:00pm. Please mark your calendars now and keep an eye out for your email invitation which will be sent following Spring Break. 3. Save the Date! Graduate Research Panel: Information Session

2. Psi Chi/Psych Club Registration Night

Join Psych Club after Spring Break for a night devoted to deciding what psychology classes you want to take next semester and get a head start in planning before meeting with your academic advisor.

3. Join Psi Chi/Psych Club for Grad School Fair 

Wednesday, March 28th, 5:00-6:30pm
N219 Elliott Hall

Join Psi Chi in collaboration with IOPC and PISA in our very first Grad School Fair. This interactive event will allow students to choose the information they want by providing a variety of booths to choose from with graduate students placed at each one. Examples of booths include How To Write a CV, Letters of Recommendation, Masters Programs, I/O Psychology, Applying Abroad, and Clinical Psych. Food will be provided by UMN Dining. Come for 5 minutes or the full hour and a half.

4. Apply To Be a Psi Chi/Psych Club Officer

We are currently looking for a new Secretary, Officer of Recruitment, and Public Relations Officer! All positions are asked to come to officer meetings to help the current officers plan events and train into the positions before next school year. If interested, fill out the brief application form by March 24th. We will make decisions by mid October. If you have any questions please direct them to psichi@umn.edu.

5. Apply for Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology

Psi Chi is the International National Honor Society in Psychology. It's a great way to improve your resume and become eligible for new opportunities within the field of psychology. We are taking applications now, and they are due March 28th. Visit the Psychology Student Organization page to find out more about becoming a member.

Scholarships

6. HECUA Scholarships

Deadline: April 15th

HECUA is able to offer eleven ($1000) scholarships for our Race in America students specifically. Eight of the eleven will be set aside for Racial Justice Scholarships and three will be offered as Social Justice Scholarships. These scholarship applications will also be due April 15th, same day as the program application deadline.

7. Community Health Initiative (CHI) Undergraduate Scholarship

Deadline: April 2nd at 11:59pm

The CHI Undergraduate Scholarship, sponsored by the Office for Business & Community Economic Development (BCED) with funding from Medica, supports full-time undergraduate students who are pursuing a health-related career and who show academic promise and financial need. Students must be currently enrolled at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities Campus and must demonstrate maturity, adaptability, and respect for diversity and other cultures. The CHI Undergraduate Scholarship is administered by the Multicultural Center for Academic Excellence (MCAE).

8. Perinatal Mental Health Symposium

TODAY: Tuesday, March 20th, 8:00-4:30pm

In collaboration with Pregnancy and Postpartum Support Minnesota (PPSM), the University of Minnesota, Department of Psychiatry, Women's Wellbeing Program will be sponsoring a reproductive psychiatry training opportunity and perinatal mental health symposium for anyone who intersects with the perinatal population, across all disciplines and levels of training, to learn more about the identification, treatment, and impact of Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs).

A certificate of completion will be offered. This event is free of charge and all are welcome.

Attendees are welcome to attend either the Morning Training, the Afternoon Symposium, or both! Please RSVP by March 16th with your preference for attendeance. For more information, visit the event page.

9. Hennepin County Site Visit

Friday, March 23rd, 10:00-12:00pm

This event will be an opportunity to connect with Hennepin County employees from many areas, including Community Engagement, Election Policy, Environment & Energy, Public Health, Public Policy, Human Services Programs and assistance, Public Safety & Criminal Justice, Environment & Energy, Urban Planning, IT, Transportation. During this visit, you will view a short presentation on Hennepin County, participate in a "world café" style networking event to meet employees from different departments, and tour the Hennepin County Government Center. Bus transportation will be provided from the East Bank Campus, departing at 9:30am and returning at 12:30pm.

12. RA Position Available in Adolescent Depression MRI Studies

Dr. Karina Quevedo is currently looking is looking for motivated Psychology undergraduates to come acquire neuroimaging research experience in her lab. There is the opportunity to gain Directed Research credit. This opportunity is geared towards students who can begin working before or at the beginning of the Summer 2017 semester for at least 1.5-2 full year.

The Health and Emotions in Adolescents: Research and Trajectories (HEART) Lab is a neuroimaging lab conducting several studies to better understand adolescent depression, suicidality, and self-harm. The HEART Lab focuses on the brain function of adolescents – with and without depression – while they complete fMRI tasks designed to examine emotion regulation and cognition. Our real-time MRI “Train Your Brain” research study that we are currently conducting is particularly exciting because there are opportunities to see how the brain works in vivo!

Required skills include basic computer and interpersonal/phone skills. Preferred skills include computer knowledge in MATLAB, SPSS, and Photoshop. The time committment for this position is about 5-12 hours/week. 13. St. Thomas Professional Psychology Online Information Session

The Graduate School of Professional Psychology at the University of Saint Thomas will be hosting an online information session Saturday, April 21, 2018, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. The M.A. in Counseling Psychology program session will begin at 10:00 a.m. and the PsyD program session will begin at 10:50 a.m. Students interested in the MA with Direct Admission to the PsyD program are encouraged to attend both. 14. Research Coordinator Position at UCLA

We are hiring a full-time research coordinator to assist in the conduct of two collaborative community-based studies of evidence-based practices (EBPs) in children’s mental health and school settings.  Under the direct supervision of Dr. Anna Lau, the coordinator will work on the 4KEEPS Project focused on “Identifying Quality Indicators within Multiple EBP Delivery in Child Mental Health Services” and the TEAMS Study focused on "Translating Evidence-Based Interventions for Autism Spectrum Disorder(ASD): A Multi-Level Implementation Strategy”. Applications due as soon as possible!

Responsibilities:

• Data collection with study participants in community mental health agencies and public schools 
• Training and management of research assistants
• Observational coding of recordings of EBP delivery in the community
• General project tasks including data tracking and management and analyses, preparing study materials, literature searches, report and manuscript preparation.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Education, or related field
• Experience with data entry/management programs (e.g., SPSS)
• Observational coding experience
• Research methods coursework, mentored research experience, or equivalent

15. Lindamood-Bell is looking for Learning Center Instructors!

16. Psychometrist with University of Minnesota Adult Neuropsychology

There is an immediate opening for a full-time staff psychometrist within the Adult Neuropsychology service for the University of Minnesota. The clinic sees adult patients with a wide variety of neurologic, psychiatric, and other medical conditions, for comprehensive neuropsychological assessment. Our psychometrists administer and score flexible batteries of standardized tests of brain function (e.g., cognition, emotion, personality), under the direction of our neuropsychologists. Most evaluations are on an outpatient basis at the Clinics and Surgery Center. We also perform inpatient evaluations on units across campus. There are some additional clerical responsibilities.
