RIDGS Book Event for Dr. Keith Mayes on Tuesday, March 21st

Please join the Center for RIDGS Studies for a book event on African American & African Studies Professor Keith Mayes' newly published book, The Unteachables: Disability Rights and the Invention of Black Special Education. The event will take place on Tuesday, March 21st at 3:00pm in Heller Hall Room 1210. Dr. Keith Mayes will discuss the most important aspects of his research on his book, which examines the overrepresentation of Black students in special education over the course of the twentieth century. Excavating the deep-seated racism embedded in both the public school system and public policy, the book explores the discriminatory labeling of Black students, and how it indelibly contributed to special education disproportionality, to student discipline and pushout practices, and to the school-to-prison pipeline effect.
He will be in conversation with Dr. Brian Lozenski, Associate Professor of Urban and Multicultural Education and Chair of the Educational Studies Department at Macalester College.
