We have reached another academic year end. Every year, we say goodbye to graduating students at all levels—BA, MA, AuD, PhD—and to faculty and staff who are leaving.
This year, we bid a very fond farewell to Dr. Arlene Carney whose entire career has involved our department in some way.

With busy schedules and professional demands, it can become easy to get caught in the trap of your own work and inadvertently ignore the needs of other communities. Dr. Kerry Witherell is working to break her students out of their regular routine by serving people who need audiological services in Minneapolis’ Phillips neighborhood. Read “Beyond the Classroom”.
As graduation nears for many students, the last semester is a time to reflect on memories at the University. Graduating senior Kaitlin Trefethen looks back on the skills and experiences she gained through speech-language-hearing sciences and how she can take that knowledge into the future. Language and our ability to communicate unites us. For some, however, disorders such as stuttering make connection more difficult. Through her research in the Speech Fluency Lab, Dr. Jayanthi Sasiekaran examines speech and language processes that contribute to speech fluency to understand why some people stutter. Professor Peggy Nelson was chosen as the 2019 Dean's Medalist for her notable contributions to speech-language-hearing sciences research and community. Read “Nelson Awarded Dean’s Medal”.
