Associate Professor Janette Dill will present, "Gender and Race in the Care Economy."

About the Talk

The Covid-19 pandemic has brought heightened attention to the care economy in the US and who performs care work. In this presentation, Professor Dill will focus on the role of racism in the stratification of the health care workforce. Specifically, she will build on the insights of interdisciplinary scholarship about the gendered and racialized division of care to examine the unique role of Black women in health care. She and her co-author argue that structural racism in the labor market, linked to historical legacies of slavery and domestic service, has had a strong impact on shaping the health care workforce. In the presentation, Professor Dill will also discuss research on mechanisms for improving care work jobs, including credentialing strategies and unionization.

About the Speaker

Professor Dill's research focuses on the health care workforce, with an emphasis on low- and middle-skill health care workers. She studies the use of credentialing and career ladders in health care settings to improve worker skills and quality of care, and the rewards to workers for participation. She also studies the use of low- and middle-skill workers in care teams across different health care settings.
