What are you looking for in an applicant?
We are looking for highly motivated applicants with an idea of what kind of research and topics they would like to explore. 

Do you offer an MA degree?
While we do offer an MA while you are persuing the PhD, we do not admit for a stand alone MA degree.

What are you looking for in a personal statement?
The personal statement is an opportunity to let us get to know you. It should be 1-3 pages (in English, Spanish or Portuguese) and should describe your background, why you are applying to our program, which faculty you are interested in working with and why, and what are your plans for the future.

Do I have to submit a 5 min voice sample?
Yes, all applicants must submit a voice sample. Native Spanish and Portuguese speakers should record theirs in English.

Do you require the GRE?
No, we no longer require GRE scores.

One of my Recommender's is unable to upload their letter. What should I do?
Please have them email it directly to spptgrad@umn.edu and/or mail a hard copy to:

Yes!

I’m an International Student. Can you help with the visa process?
The University of Minnesota Twin Cities is dedicated to facilitating the visa process. For more information and questions, visit International Student and Scholar Services.

Can I visit?
Yes! We will be hosting online information sessions in the Fall for prospective students and a visit day in the Spring for accepted students. Stay tuned for more information.

What are your TOEFL/IELTS/MELAB requirements?
TOEFL Internet based test: 79 or above with section scores of 21 on writing and 19 on reading.
IELTS: 6.5
MELAB: 80
