As part of the directives from University of Minnesota president Joan Gabel, the Minnesota Department of Health, and the governor’s office, Spanish & Portuguese Studies is now running a virtual office environment. 

All faculty, staff, and instructors are required to work remotely unless their job physically requires them to be on campus.

Beginning March 18 and through the end of the spring 2020 semester, in-person instruction on all University campuses is suspended. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your instructor.

Make a Google Hangout or Phone Appointment through April 1st
Spanish and Portuguese Studies appointments will be held via Google Hangout or phone. Available appointments can be seen at this link. If you elect the phone option, we will call you from a restricted/private phone number. If you can not find an available appointment time, please email spadvise@umn.edu

Zoom drop-in hours
Drop-ins will be held via Zoom during specific times.  Student must have either installed the Zoom for Meetings Desktop App or the Zoom Mobile App in order to attend drop-in hours. We recommend a computer as the mobile app does not always work well. If you do not have access to the internet, please call 612-624-9348 and leave a message with a return phone number.  We will call you back as soon as possible.

During drop-in hours, go to our Zoom site and enter the waiting room.  An advisor will meet with students in order of how they entered the waiting room.

Drop-in hours will be updated weekly.

Writing Center

Due to the recent transition of all University wide classes being offered online only, the Writing Center hours will also be offered via online mode only starting 3/16/2020 for the remainder of Spring 2020 Semester. All pre-existent appointments  will be adjusted to zoom. Please see appointment hours below. If you have any additional questions, please contact spwrite@umn.edu

Tutor Lab

Due to the recent transition of all University wide classes being offered online only, the Tutor Lab has closed for the remainder of the semester. Students are encouraged to reach out to their instructors for any extra assistance that they may need during this time.

Teaching Remotely

  • Triage Requests: If your course requires special support, please send requests to LATIS at teachremote@umn.edu, but be ready to expect delays
  • Live Zoom Training Sessions: Group-based live training and consultation sessions to guide instructors through this process and to learn more about some tools. Click here for descriptions, dates, and times.
  • Accessibility/Accommodations: Instructors are urged to remember to provide accessibility/accommodation needs via closed captioning and transcripts (machine driven). Further information is available at accessibility.umn.edu.
  • Class Times: Stick with designated class times
  • Internships/Service Learning: The instructional part of these courses should continue. More information is forthcoming
