Career counselors are here to assist you!

Career counselors meet with CLA undergraduate students in individual appointments. Career counselors can assist students with all aspects of major and career exploration and the job or graduate school search process.

We help students:

  • Explore majors and career options
  • Learn more about your values, interests, identity, personality, skills, strengths - sometimes through the use of assessments
  • Consider the core career competencies that you want to build during college
  • Build experience through internships, part-time jobs, service & volunteering, research, off-campus study, campus leadership and more ¬†

Schedule and prepare for a career counseling appointment

To schedule an individual career counseling appointment please call CLA Career Services: 612-624-7577 or stop in to our front desk in 411 Bruininks Hall during business hours (8:00-4:30 p.m.). Initial appointments are scheduled for 30 minutes. We are committed to providing a comfortable, inclusive, and respectful environment for all members of our communities. If you have any accommodation needs, or other information that would be helpful for your counselor to know, please let the front desk know.

We also meet with students during drop-in visits. During drop-in visits, peer advisors are available to assist you with resume and cover letter reviews. They can also help you get started with a variety of other career-related topics.

What to expect during your appointment

  • Appointments are typically 30¬†minutes.
  • Please arrive a few minutes early and check in at the front desk in 411 Bruininks Hall.
  • Bring along your resume if you have one, and any other materials that may be helpful (such as job descriptions for positions you are interested in or any notes or handouts you like to reference). You can also bring a notebook and pen if you would like to take any notes during your appointment.
  • When it is time for your appointment your career counselor will greet you in our lobby area and walk you back to their office for your appointment.
  • During your appointment, your counselor will ask you questions to get to know you, understand your needs, and determine how they can assist you.
  • Throughout the appointment you can feel free to ask your counselor any questions you have or ask for clarification if anything is not clear.
  • During the appointment your counselor may share a variety of online or printed resources with you.
  • At the end of your appointment you and your counselor will identify some next steps for you to work on after the appointment ends and make sure your questions are answered before they walk you back out to the lobby area.
  • If you want to schedule another appointment in the future you can do so with the counselor before you go, or at the front desk.
Mandatory Reporting: In the event that you choose to write or speak about having survived sexualized violence, including rape, sexual assault, dating violence, domestic violence, or stalking during your appointment, federal and state education laws require that we must notify the U of M Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action Office (EEOA).
