Summary

Mac Beth by Erica Schmidt is a bold, contemporary adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, reimagined through the lens of a group of teenage girls. Set in an urban, modern-day environment, the play follows these young women as they gather after school to perform Shakespeare’s dark tragedy. What begins as a theatrical exercise soon blurs the line between performance and reality, as ambition, violence, and power take hold in unsettling ways.

Schmidt’s adaptation explores themes of identity, peer dynamics, and the consequences of unchecked desire, all while staying true to Shakespeare’s original text. The raw intensity of teenage emotions heightens the play’s themes of fate and ambition, making it a visceral and gripping retelling. Mac Beth is a powerful commentary on gender, violence, and the performative nature of both theater and real life, offering a fresh and chilling take on one of Shakespeare’s most famous tragedies.
