Based in Brooklyn, MBDance Artistic Director Maria Bauman is a Bessie-Award winning multi-disciplinary artist and community organizer from Jacksonville, FL. She creates bold and honest artworks for her company MBDance, based on physical and emotional power, insistence on equity, and experiments with intimacy. She draws on her studies of English literature, capoeira, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, improvisation, dancing in living rooms and nightclubs, as well as concert dance training to embody interconnectedness, joy and tenacity. She is also a community organizer and co-founder of ACRE (Artists Co-creating Real Equity). Organizing to undo racism informs her art-making and the two are folded together within her practice.

About Cowles Visiting Artists
Since 1987, through the generosity of Sage and John Cowles, University of Minnesota Dance has annually hosted four to six dance professionals of international renown in residencies ranging from one to ten weeks. The guests teach, choreograph new dance work, rehearse repertory, and lecture in the Department of Theatre Arts & Dance, and the Twin Cities community at large.
The Cowles Land Grant Chair connects nationally and internationally recognized artists and scholars with dance students, exposing them to contemporary artistry, masterwork, and new thinking in dance studies. University of Minnesota Dance is unique for its extensive use of renowned professional artists in the education and training of students.
