Maryam Houshyar (MA/PhD)
Maryam’s deepest passion is to find a way to combine her background in Iranian theatre with her current explorations in dance, theatre for social change, and performance theories. Her vision is to return home and contribute what she has learned here to the emerging generation of young theatre practitioners and scholars in Iran. Maryam completed her MA at University of Maryland, where she explored the embodied practices of dance, and wrote a thesis on Iranian independent theatre festivals. She plans to continue this investigation at the University of Minnesota, focusing on the potential for revolution in Iranian Independent Theatre. Maryam’s other research interests include Iranian modern theatre, Iranian traditional theatrical forms, theatre for social change, and theatre for education.
