Surafel Abebe (MA/PhD)

Surafel W. Abebe is from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He obtained a degree in English Literature minoring in Political Science and International Relations. He also received his MA in Cultural Studies at Addis Ababa University where he served as a lecturer and assistant dean in Humanities. Surafel attended two summer schools in BIARI at Brown University. He is interested in critical global conversations in humanities. Particularly, he takes performance as a mode of thought and site of contestation to think through questions of circulation of power, bodies and subjectivities. Being a PhD student at the University of Minnesota in Theatre Historiography program, he enquires into participation of drama and performance in the construction of nationhood and subjectivity in the 20th and 21st Century Ethiopia.
