Providing Feedback to Short Story Writers from Across the World

As an Editorial Intern and Writing Judge with The Writer's Workout, English major Anastasia Ledyaeva reviewed and provided feedback on short stories from writers around the world. The experience strengthened her skills in developmental editing, copyediting, and communication while confirming her interest in pursuing a career in editing and publishing. What do you like most about your internship? 

If you don't like your internship what have you learned from this experience? 

I really enjoyed the opportunity to read and provide feedback to an incredibly wide variety of short stories by writers from across the world. By helping writers revise and edit their work, I was able to both refine my developmental editing skills and reflect on how to better revise my own writing in the future.

How did your internship help you discern what you do or don't want to do in a future job?

My internship helped me understand that I am both capable of and interested in pursuing an editorial career. With skills in slush pile reading, copyediting and line editing, and interpersonal communication, I now know that it is a field I can succeed in.

What tips would you have for future Gophers around internships?

My best advice would be to expand your search beyond the "big names" of the career field you want to go into. Look at small businesses, non-profits, and start-ups that offer internships related to the work you want to do in the future, and consider applying to them to gain experience.
