I study the judicial decision-making behavior of judges with a regional focus in East Asia, particularly South Korea. I am interested in judicial diversity, especially in societies characterized by homogeneous race, gender inequality, and hierarchical culture. Holding race constant, my dissertation focuses on the effect of a judge's personal characteristics such as gender, age, generation and gender norms on the outcomes of sexual assault cases. Taking into consideration the influence of hierarchy among judges based on their age and rank, I explore how a judge's gender and rank interact to create unequal voices among judges during the deliberation process and consequently affect the outcome of sexual assault cases, gender-based crimes.
