Serra Hakyemez is on leave from June 2021 to January 2023.
Serra Hakyemez is Assistant Professor of Anthropology and Global Studies.
Her research concentrates on the intertwinement of the armed violence of counterinsurgency and the legally sanctioned violence of judiciary with a special focus on Turkey’s counterinsurgency operations in Kurdistan since the 1980s. She examines the relations of solidarity established in pursuit of decolonization by imprisoned Kurds in the interstices of the special juridical regime inaugurated by the counterinsurgency warfare.S he is interested in the visual and juridical economy of counterinsurgent violence.
She is currently working on her book manuscript, The Law’s Enemy: War, Solidarity, and Insurgent Justice. She is a recipient of the ACLS Fellowship and the Wenner-Gren-Hunt Fellowship.
She received her Ph.D. in Anthropology from the Johns Hopkins University in 2016. She previously worked at Brandeis University and the University of Edinburgh.
