My dissertation, titled “‘I Hear That God Saith Work’: Mortality and Labor in Massachusetts, 1619-1680,” asks this question: How were labor practices structured, challenged, and transformed by religious beliefs about death in seventeenth-century Massachusetts? I argue that unprovable, intangible beliefs about afterlives profoundly impacted the tangible, everyday forms of labor performed by Ninnimissinuok communities and Puritan settlements.

My methodology is informed by Indigenous studies, queer studies, and disability studies. All forms of oppression are interconnected, and I am committed to writing histories that reflect perspectives that have been forced to the margins in past historiography.
