Welcome to Molly Kessler

The Department of Writing Studies is pleased to announce that Molly Kessler, PhD, will be joining our faculty in fall 2018 as a tenure-track assistant professor specializing in rhetoric of science and rhetoric of health and medicine.

Kessler holds a PhD in professional and technical communication from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and is currently an assistant professor at the University of Memphis, where she teaches courses in rhetoric and professional and technical communication.

Her research is grounded primarily in rhetorical studies of health and medicine with secondary influence from technical communication, disability studies, and feminist theory. Broadly speaking, Molly is interested in examining the rhetorical negotiations and challenges of patienthood, and she has worked on projects that investigate why prescription drug labels are ineffective potentially harmful documents, how particular media influence self-weighing and weight loss habits, and how notions of self (and nonself) are transformed for patients with autoimmune diseases. Her most current project aims to trace the origin and evolution of stigma surrounding digestive diseases.

Welcome, Molly!
