Featured TCAB Member: Jerry Grohovsky
Jerry Grohovsky started his degree in architecture, then switched to journalism where he developed strong skills in writing and rhetoric. Following the advice of a family member, he pursued technical writing, starting out as a tech writer in the 1970s. In 1993 Jerry started JPG & Associates, Inc., a staffing and consulting firm that specializes in technical writing. With over 5,000 projects and 160 clients, they had to begin staffing contract writers. Eighty-five percent of what JPG does now is staffing with the remaining 15% of projects and deliverables developed in house.
Jerry makes a strong case that technical writers often have diverse backgrounds. “JPG hires technical writers who have law degrees, history degrees, sociology degrees, and even journalism degrees. You never know in the technical writing; the path isn’t always straight, and it wasn’t always a path that existed really”. He advises that this is a great time to consider a career in technical writing. “There is no better time than right now. [A] Strong economy and plethora of industries is in need of technical writers with many people retiring.”
When asked about his vision for the TCAB, he said that he wanted to help as much as possible to bridge any gaps between the academic and corporate world. “Being informed and aware of skills that are needed for a successful start is important.”
