Welcome to the new Writing Center Coordinator: Quentin James

Quentin James joins the Department of Writing Studies as the Coordinator of the Writing Center. Quentin has an MA in English/Creative Writing from Florida State University and has a depth of experience across multiple institutions as an instructor and Writing Center leader. We look forward to his contributions to the success of student writers. Learn more about Quentin below.

Tell us a little bit about your background leading a Writing Center.

Most recently, I served as the Academic Support Coordinator of Liberal Arts at Saint Paul College. Prior to that, I was the Associate Coordinator of the Writing Center at Roxbury Community College in Boston, MA. I have also worked in writing centers at Florida State University, Wheelock College, and St. Louis Community College, experiences that have given me the opportunity to learn from a variety of writing center models and leadership approaches. 

What most excites you about being a part of the Writing Center and Writing Studies?

I am excited to be a part of a collaborative environment that empowers students to take ownership of their learning. I am also excited about the opportunity to help students become more confident and independent writers as they discover their potential. 

What can student writers (undergraduate or graduate) expect from you?

I strive to help writers alleviate some of the anxiety that comes with writing by encouraging them to focus on what it is they exactly want to communicate to the reader. Student writers can expect support and guidance that cultivates a sense of discovery, challenges them to critically explore their perspective, and puts them in charge of the decisions they make on the page.  

When training consultants, what is one of the most important things you want them to know when supporting student writers?

Every writer is different. Listen to their needs and goals and meet them where they are. It is important that consultants remain student-centered focusing on the learning process in addition to the final product.   

What is one fun fact about you?

I’m originally from St. Louis, MO—go Cards!
