Writing Studies Supports the Stop Hate For Profit Campaign
The Department of Writing Studies at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities has formally signed on to the Stop Hate For Profit campaign. By joining this movement the department has committed to boycott advertising on Facebook for at least the month of July 2020.
Although the Department of Writing Studies has never depended on Facebook as an advertising platform for recruiting students, staff, or faculty, the department joined the Stop Hate For Profit campaign calling for organizations to boycott buying Facebook ads for several reasons. First, the campaign is in alignment with the department’s commitment to actively create socially just learning and workplace environments and opportunities (You can read the department’s official statement on Equity and Diversity). Second, we view taking a formal stand against the spread of hate on the Facebook platform as a necessary condition of our commitment to stand against discriminatory and violent acts, and to stand in solidarity with BIPOC.
