Retirement of Dr. Anne Lazaraton

Associate Professor Anne Lazaraton will retire from the University of Minnesota on May 29, 2022. Professor Lazaraton’s areas of specialization include applied linguistics research methodology, spoken discourse and interaction, language assessment, English grammar in use, multilingual writing, and technical editing. Professor Lazaraton earned her Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics at UCLA in Los Angeles in 1991 and joined the University of Minnesota Faculty in 2000 in the Program in English as a Second Language, Institute of Linguistics, English as a Second Language, and Slavic Languages and Literatures. Prior to joining the University of Minnesota, she worked in graduate programs with pre- and in-service English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers at The Pennsylvania State University and George Mason University. In 2013, she joined the Department of Writing Studies. 

Professor Lazaraton held several leadership roles at the University of Minnesota, including Faculty Director of the Minnesota English Language Program in the College of Continuing Education (2006-2007), Program Director of Second Language Studies (2009-2012), and Director of Graduate Studies in Second Language Studies (2003-2005; 2006-2012). From 2013-2016, Professor Lazaraton served as the Faculty Director for the Writing for International Students (WINS) initiative funded through the Vice-Provost's Office of Undergraduate Education, which is dedicated to enhancing first-year and advanced writing support for international undergraduate students across the University. Recently, she has taught multilingual writers in First Year Writing (WRIT 1301) and Technical and Professional Writing (WRIT 3562W), international graduate students in Graduate Research Presentations and Conference Writing for Nonnative Speakers of English (WRIT 5052), and Writing Studies undergraduate majors in Technical Editing (WRIT 3441).

We are grateful for Professor Lazaraton’s many years of outstanding service to the university and to her students, colleagues and friends.
