Akeem Anderson is originally from Brooklyn, NY but is currently based out of Twin Cities, MN. He received his B.A. from Dartmouth College. He is of Guyanese and Panamanian descent. He is currently a J.D. and Ph.D. student at the University of Minnesota with a minor in Race, Indigeneity, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (RIDGS). Akeem is working to redefine and reconceptualize the ways in which the intersections of race, health, and law are utilized and used as a point of strategic reference. Specifically, his research focus highlights the interembedded issues of identity, professional spaces, medical, and legal spheres. Instead of considering each intersection of identity as an afterthought, he considers the ways that these disenfranchisements are constantly occurring, connected throughout history and informing present conditions. He aims to address systemic forms of antiblack violence that occur through medical legal spaces. Outside of academic work, Akeem actively enjoys working on photography as well as with plants and animals in the house. He also enjoys community building, event planning, and organizing to bring people together.
